About

Science-trained.
Illustration-hearted.

I'm Soumita Samanta — a scientific illustrator and data visualizer based in Hyderabad, India. My practice sits at the intersection of science, visual communication, and information design.

I hold a master's in physics, but the degree was always a means rather than an end. What I was really training was my eye — learning to see the structure inside complex systems, and then find the visual form that makes that structure legible to someone else.

For several years I worked as a subject matter expert in the education space, explaining science to young people. Eventually my creative side caught on and I moved on to working as a scientific illustrator, explaining science through images, building a client base through research institutions and academic publishers. That work taught me precision, patience, and most of all, the importance of being a perpetual learner.

Where I'm going

I'm now exploring data visualization and editorial information design. I'm interested in stories that live in complex data: the patterns that only emerge when you look at many things at once.

How I work

I move between Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Delhi, and work with clients remotely across India and internationally. I take on freelance illustration. I'm particularly interested in science communication and educational content.

If you have a project in mind, I'd love to hear about it.
